The living room speaks for itself – you do a lot of living there! It’s where families gather, guests are entertained, and memories are made in your custom home. With so much time spent in this space, it can feel daunting to design a living room that flows and functions well. Our Clarity Homes team has assembled these tips and guidelines to designing a space that your family can live in – and love.
Arranging living room furniture
When starting to design a living room, start with key furniture pieces like sofas and chairs. Arrange your furniture to create a comfortable conversation area. Minimize large furniture pieces so that there’s enough space for easy movement and traffic flow. Shoot for ideally 30″ to 36″ inches of walking space between those large pieces – or at least 18″. Also, ensure there is no less than 3.5′ and no more than 10′ of space between seating.
Living room table tips
Scale is important when it comes to pairing a coffee table with your living room sofa. Choose a table that’s at least half the length of the sofa. Also, select a table that’s within 4 inches of the height of your sofa cushion, so you’re not bending down or reaching up to use it. If you have side or accent tables as well, feel free to mix up materials and shapes to add visual interest.
Picking the right rug
When selecting a rug, choose one that at least accommodates the front legs of the sofa and any chairs. This anchors the space and adds warmth. Start by considering an 8×10 rug and go up from there. Don’t try and make a small rug work and leave your furniture out floating!
Consider ceilings and lighting
Pay attention to the vertical space as well. High ceilings can be emphasized with tall furniture and vertical artwork, while lower ceilings may benefit from lower-profile furniture and lighter colors. When choosing a ceiling light, multiply your ceiling height by 2.5 – 3 to get the recommended measurement of your light fixture’s width in inches.
