Pillows: the unsung hero of room decor. From the bedroom to the living room, they add character, color and coziness to your home. Styling pillows throughout the house can be easily overlooked, but putting thought into how you use them can introduce a level of luxury and comfort.
Use this guide to pillow styling to get a quick education on:
- Pillow sizing
- Inserts
- Number of pillows
- Color of pillows
- Layering pillows
What size pillow is best for your furniture
- Consider the size of the furniture piece you’re styling when you look at pillow sizes. Throw pillows should complement your bed, sofa, bench or other furniture piece – not overwhelm it. However, lone pillows that are too small can look strange. Try to find a happy medium – layering pillows can help! (See below.)
- The classic square pillow is a great place to start. A 20-inch square pillow looks great on most couches. You can also use 18-inch or 22-inch for variety.
- Longer lumbar pillows can be great on wider pieces of furniture, as they take up more horizontal visual space.
- Unconventional pillows in all shapes and sizes add whimsy to your space. Round, cube, or even animal shaped pillows are perfect for a quirky family room, kids room or flex space.

How many pillows you should use
- According to Parachute, interior designers favor an odd number of pillows. For example, a 6-foot sofa would likely need 5 to 7 pillows. However, if you have a more modern space, an even number of pillows allows you to create valuable symmetry that aligns with this design aesthetic.
- Size of the furniture piece also matters when you choose the number of pillows you use. You can layer large to small pillows on a large bed. In contrast, a smaller sofa would benefit from layering a few large and many small pillows.
How to add additional color or texture to your room with pillows
- Begin by selecting an “anchor color” that you can orient your pillow colors around. This might be the color of a large furniture piece or simply a color you’d like to use in the space.
- Use pillows to contrast textures – think a pillow with a large knit texture against a smooth comforter on a bed.
- Take a chance on mixing colors, patterns and prints! Small touches of contrasting items can make a big impact on a neutral palette like a beige or grey couch.
- You can also go neutral with your pillows, especially if you are styling a furniture piece with a bright color or print. Neutral pillows add interest to these pieces without overwhelming the space with more pattern or color.

Choosing new pillows can help refresh the look and feel of the rooms in your home. They add color, texture, and most of all – comfort. See more ways to carry pillows throughout the house in our lookbooks.
