Making your space reflect your personal style can be a fun challenge for a new homeowner. An easy place to start is by choosing art for your walls. As you consider different pieces, you’ll also have to consider:
- how to match and style multiple pieces together
- how to select frames for your art
- what size art to consider, and more.
The following tips from our design team contain simple, yet useful pieces of advice about choosing, hanging and styling art for your home.
Choosing and sizing art for your space
- First, consider that art is about expression and emotion. Choose art and wall decor that appeals to your personal style, allowing your home to reflect said style.
- Choose art that sets the tone that you’d like for your space. Carefully consider color, tone, and size. Think a breezy photograph of your family at the ocean for a sunroom, or a large abstract painting for your formal dining room.
- Use multiple pieces of art to “fill” the available space on your wall. For example, if you have a very tall room, hang two pieces of art stacked on top of each other to fill the vertical space.
- Once you make a decision, revisit your selections in a few months or a year. Swapping out art is an easy way to refresh the look of a room.

Styling multiple pieces together
- Gallery walls are great choices to display multiple pieces of art, especially if you’re looking to make the most of a large wall in your home.
- Incorporate a mix of art mediums when styling multiple pieces. You can use photographs, paintings, fiber art pieces, and even rugs or quilts to make an impact in your home.
- Avoid trying to style too many pieces of art together. Negative space and simplicity are important, too!
Hanging art at the right height
- A large individual piece of art should be hung at eye level – about 60 inches from the floor to the center of the piece. Keep this eye level height consistent throughout your home whenever you hang art.
- If you are styling a gallery wall, hang one key piece at eye level, then orient other pieces around it.
- Avoid aligning art by the top or bottom of the frame; keep pieces aligned at eye level for a cohesive, focused look. Also, don’t hang art too close to the ceiling.
- If you’re hanging art above furniture, allow 6-8 inches of clearance.

Pairing art with frames
- Choose frames that complement the art they’re protecting. You might choose frames that are contrasting colors to the art, or frames that match a key color in the piece.
- If you’re hanging a gallery wall, frames can vary in orientation, shape and size, but only use a few colors or materials to avoid visual overwhelm.
